203rd Museum Council Meeting

Present: Vilhjálmur Bjarnason, Chair, Gunnhildur Ásta Guðmundsdóttir, Helga Lára Þorsteinsdóttir, Hlynur Hallsson (webinar), Harpa Þórsdóttir, Hilmar Malmquist (webinar), Margrét Hallgrímsdóttir, and Þóra Björk Ólafsdóttir, Executive Director. Inga Lára Baldvinsdóttir was absent.

1. Presentation case

  1. Overview of the council's activities since the last meeting.
  2. Awarded in the main allocation of the museum fund 2021. The Minister of Education and Culture has allocated funds from the 2021 main distribution of the Museum Fund. The fund received a total of 179 applications from 51 entities: 44 recognized museums, 3 entities in collaboration with a recognized museum, and 4 associations or individuals. The total grant amount from the 2021 main allocation of the Museum Fund is 168,540,000 kr. A total of 117 one-year grants are awarded, amounting to 137,940,000 kr. 10 Excellence Grants are awarded, distributed as follows: for 2021, kr. 30,600,000; for 2022, kr. 36,100,000; and for 2023, kr. 31,700,000. The total amount for the entire grant period is kr. 98,400,000.
  3. The council discussed a letter received by the museum board regarding museum affairs in Vestmannaeyjar municipality.
  4. Action Plan Following the Strategic Plan for Museum Work. The next steps regarding the creation of an action plan following the Strategic Framework for Museum Work were discussed.

 2. Matters for decision

  1.  Part 2 of the monitoring of accredited collections – final visit. Visitation reports from two museums were presented for approval. It was decided to add a section to the reports regarding the general condition of the premises. Updated reports will be sent to the museum board between meetings for approval.
  2. Budget 2021 was approved.
  3. Work Plan 2021 was approved.
  4. Updated Policy on Collection Management Approved.

 3. Other issues

The council discussed that the government should be encouraged to give a special cultural gift to the nation's citizens this spring, similar to the government's travel gift from last summer.
