Approved between council meetings

Regarding deferred item 2.6 from the 178th meeting of the Board of Trustees: On December 20, 2018, the Board of Trustees approved, via email, a response to a letter from the Skagfirðingar Folk Museum.

1. Matter for presentation

  1. Overview of the council's activities since the last meeting.
  2. Last December, the Minister of Education and Culture, upon receiving a recommendation from the Museum Council, allocated a total of 11,512,100 kr. in 43 professional development grants to 31 accredited museums from the 2018 supplemental allocation of the Museum Fund. Two types of grants were awarded, 28 grants of the type Continuing education for museum staff, on the one hand, A total of 7,645,100 kr. and 15 grants support the species.   3. The allocation meeting for the main distribution from the Museum Fund was held on Friday, January 11, 2019, and the Museum Council's proposal for the allocation was sent to the Minister of Education and Culture the following week for a decision. 142 project grant applications were received from 50 entities, and 37 accredited museums submitted operating grant applications.
  4. The Board of Museums approved the establishment of a working group, which will simultaneously work on the Board's strategic direction for museum operations and the strategic plans for the National Gallery of Iceland and the National Museum of Natural History. The directors of the main museums or their representatives shall be members of the working group, along with Þóra Björk Ólafsdóttir, Executive Director of the Museum Council, who will serve as the working group's project manager. The Museum Council expects the working group to complete its work by November 1, 2019.

2. Matters for decision

  1. The 2019 work plan was approved.
  2. The 2019 budget was approved.
  3. The Council of Museums confirmed receipt of the evaluation report from the supervisory board regarding the Cultural Center of Þingeyjar.
  4. It was approved that the directors of accredited museums shall submit to the Museum Council Notice of a change in the operations of an accredited museum if there is a change in the museum's operations. The notification is based on the museum's accreditation application and serves both to inform the museum board about changes affecting the terms of accredited museums, and to provide museums with a checklist to ensure the change meets the requirements and therefore does not affect their accreditation.

3. Other matters

  • The status of three accredited museums was discussed.
