According to Article 11. Museums Act No. 141/2011 A recognized museum may be granted a grant from the state treasury to cover its establishment costs. In order for a grant to be considered, the terms and conditions set by the Museum Council for museum housing must be met, which include provisions for the security and preservation of museum objects. The Ministry of Culture receives and awards applications for establishment grants, but the application must be accompanied by confirmation from the Museum Council that the requested premises meet these terms and conditions.

Museum Council confirmation

The Museum Council's confirmation of an application for a foundation grant from the Ministry of Culture is based on:

  1. data that the museum sends to the museum board
  2. a visit by the Museum Council's supervisory committee if applicable
  3. If applicable – the museum board may seek other evaluation bodies if necessary.

The documents that the Museum Council needs to receive from the museum must confirm that the building for which a grant is being applied for meets the Museum Council's requirements for museum premises. These conditions are under section 4 of the conditions. recognitions:

  1. Housing
    1. The museum shall have work permit from the health inspectorate and submit a copy of it to the museum board upon request.
    2. The fire department shall conduct regular inspections of the museum's premises, and a copy of the fire department's report shall be submitted to the museum board upon request. Conditions in exhibition and storage premises shall be such that the long-term preservation of artifacts is ensured.
  2. Security issues
    1. The museum must have a functioning security system, including fire, burglary and moisture alarms. Confirmation of the functioning of the security systems must be submitted to the museum board upon request.
    2. The museum shall monitor the amount of light, temperature and humidity in its premises, measurements shall be recorded regularly and information shall be submitted to the museum board upon request.
    3. A museum must have an emergency plan for staff, visitors and museum resources.

The following documents must be submitted to the Museum Board:

  • Formal letter requesting confirmation from the museum board
  • Drawings of the premises
  • Information about the museum's fire protection and security systems and confirmations if available
  • Copies of emergency plans
  • Even a summary of construction/modification costs if the applicant believes it will clarify the issue.
  • In rare cases, further data or information is requested.

Following receipt of the data, the museum board or the museum contacts the museum and a visit from a member of the museum board's supervisory committee is then arranged.

In exceptional cases, the museum board may seek the services of other expert appraisers if necessary.

Article 11 Foundation grants.
 A recognized museum may be granted a grant from the state treasury to cover establishment costs. In order for a grant to be considered, the terms and conditions set by the Museum Council for museum housing must be followed. These terms and conditions shall, among other things, stipulate the security and preservation of museum objects.
 The contribution shall be made according to a special agreement and payment schedule that the museum's management makes with the ministry before construction begins or a purchase agreement is concluded. If these formal requirements are not met, the museum shall not be eligible for a foundation grant from the treasury in accordance with the provisions of the article.
 Before signing an agreement on a state contribution pursuant to this article, the museum in question must submit confirmation that other initial costs are covered.
 Funding for foundation grants under this article is subject to the decision of the Althingi on contributions in the budget.
