Lilja Alfreðsdóttir, Minister of Education and Culture, has discussed the Museums Council's proposal from October 21, 2021, regarding the recognition of museums according to the Museums Act No. 141/2011.
The Minister, on the recommendation of the Council, granted Einar Jónsson Art Museum recognition.
The Einar Jónsson Art Museum is both a well-established and intriguing art museum of a pioneer in Icelandic art. The museum is located in a three-story, completely preserved building on Skólavörðuholt surrounded by an extensive sculpture garden. From an architectural perspective, the Hnitbjörg museum building is shrouded in a fairy tale and is a unique gem in the center of Reykjavík. The museum's exhibition spaces are spacious and historic. The Einar Jónsson Art Museum is the first art museum in the country to be opened to the public in its own premises in 1923. The museum houses the sculptor's studios from the past as well as Reykjavík's first penthouse, which was formerly part of Einar and Anna's home and is now preserved as such.
The Museum Council congratulates the Einar Jónsson Art Museum on the recognition.
