What is a museum? The new museum definition

Meeting at the Maritime Museum on Wednesday, March 4, 9:30 - 12:00

ICOM, FÍSOS and the museum council calls a general meeting Wednesday, March 4th at 9:30 a.m. at the Maritime Museum in Reykjavík, where the new ICOM definition of museums will be discussed.

The new museum definition was presented at the general meeting of the International Council of Museums held in Kyoto in September 2019. The outcome of the meeting was to postpone the vote on the definition and call for further suggestions from members on the content of the definition.

Jette Sandahl, chair of the committee on the new museum definition, has accepted an invitation from the Icelandic section of ICOM, FÍSOS and the Museum Council to present a paper at the meeting and explain the work that has already taken place and what the goals of the current working group on the subject are.

It is a great privilege for members of ICOM and FÍSOS to have Jette come to the country and discuss whether and what impact the new definition has on museum work in Iceland. Also to provide suggestions and proposals for improvements.

The meeting's organizing committee encourages all members and those interested in the work of museums in Iceland to attend the meeting.
