The Museum Council is advertising for applications for the 2020 main allocation of the Museum Fund

Starting with the main allocation of the Museum Fund 2020, there will be a change in that allocations from the fund will be undivided. The use of the terms "operating and project grants" has been discontinued and instead grants from the Museum Fund will be awarded in specific categories. Grants in the main allocation of the Museum Fund are either one year old or to 2-3 years old and are then called Excellence Scholarships for distinction. Only recognized museums can apply Excellence Scholarships from a museum fund.

It is worth noting that the funds in the museum fund will increase significantly starting in 2020 according to the budget proposal for 2020, as it is expected that over 200 million ISK will be allocated from the museum fund that year.

One-year scholarships

Recognized museums can apply. one-year scholarship in addition, other museums, main museums, museum guides, centers and exhibitions may apply for allocations from the Museum Fund in collaboration with recognized museums, where the recognized museum is the responsible party. The Fund is also authorized to support other activities to promote professional museum work, including research in the Fund's field of work and the dissemination of information about them.

One main category of grant is applied for in the grant application. There are nine grant categories in total, and when evaluating applications in all categories except one, the rules for project grants set out in the Museums Act No. 141/2011 and the Museum Fund's allocation rules No. 551/2016 are followed. Scholarships for 2-3 years – Excellence Scholarships

Excellence Scholarships are a new category of grants awarded for 2-3 years subject to funding from the fund. Only accredited museums can apply Excellence Scholarships from a museum fund.

A grant proposal is not automatically made to all applicants who meet the requirements of the Act on Recognized Museums, but the amounts and number of grants will depend on the fund's available funds, the number and quality of applications.

It is possible to apply for up to 10-15 million ISK, which is distributed over the grant period. Requirements are made for clear and well-prepared applications and for the applicant's contribution. There is also a requirement for confirmation of other sponsors and what their support consists of (e.g. financial contribution, work contribution and to which part of the project the support goes). The museum fund must also be mentioned as a sponsor.

  • A grant is not automatically proposed to all eligible applicants, but the amounts and number of grants will depend on the fund's available funds and the number and quality of applications.
  • Applications received after the application deadline will not be considered.
  • The Museum Council reviews all applications for the museum fund and evaluates them professionally, taking into account the Museums Act No. 141/2011, Museum Fund Allocation Rules No. 551/2016 and Museum Council procedures.
