Museum Council symposium at the National Museum of Iceland

The Museum Council is hosting a symposium on museum research at the National Museum on November 6th.

Research should be an important part of museum work and one of the prerequisites for museum work to be in step with the times. The Museum Council wants to explore and assess the importance of research in museum work and find ways to strengthen the role of research in museum work.

Attention will be focused on the role of research in museum work and on the role of museums in promoting understanding of the development and status of culture, art, nature and science through their research and dissemination.

We will examine the characteristics of museum research and the expectations of the academic community towards museums as research institutions.

9:00 – 9:45: Ólöf Gerður Sigfúsdóttir, doctoral student in museology at the University of Iceland and director of research services at the University of Iceland: Museums as knowledge centers: a survey of the scope and organization of research in Icelandic museum work. 10:00 -10:45: Sophie Bruun, expert from the Danish Agency for Culture in Copenhagen: On the status of research in museums in Denmark

11:00 -11:30: Sigurður Gylfi Magnússon, associate professor of cultural history at the School of Humanities, University of Iceland, based at the National Museum: Time and passion – concepts in university and museum research

11:30 – 12:00: Orri Vésteinsson, professor of archaeology at the University of Iceland: Archaeological research and museums

1:00 PM – 2:15 PM: The value and role of research in museums:
