
The Minister of Education, Science and Culture has considered the Museums Council's proposal from November 25, 2020, regarding the recognition of museums according to the Museums Act No. 141/2011.
The Minister, on the recommendation of the Council, granted Icelandic Film Archive recognition.
The Icelandic Film Museum is a state-owned museum and operates in accordance with the Film Act No. 137/2001. The museum's main role is to collect, document and preserve Icelandic films; monitor the return of film material in accordance with Act on compulsory donations to museums and organizes exhibitions of domestic and foreign cinema. The museum also plays the role of maintaining and restoring the museum's films and creating facilities for scholars and professionals to conduct film research.
