Relaxation of the ban on gatherings and possible opening of museums
Changed rules on restrictions on gatherings came into effect from May 4, see website covid.is. This means that museums can reopen to their visitors. However, rules regarding crowd limits (50 people) and a two-meter social distance limit apply and museums must respect these conditions.
Museums can therefore open to visitors, as long as they can ensure appropriate distance between visitors and limit the number at any one time. It is noted, however, that whether museums can open at this point depends largely on the housing options, staffing levels and location of each museum.
There is no requirement on the part of the museum board to open the museum, but this is a decision made by each museum in dialogue with its owners and the community. The museums' opening hours can be found on their websites and on their social media pages.
