Museum recognition

The Minister of Education, Culture and Sports has considered the Museums Council's proposal from 18 December 2013 on the recognition of museums in accordance with the Museums Act No. 141/2011. The Minister, on the Council's proposal, granted recognition to 39 museums. The recognized museums are:

  • Hvoll Regional Museum, Dalvík

The Minister's decision on the recognition of the museum is indefinite, but the Minister may revoke the recognition of a museum upon receipt of a proposal from the Museum Council if the Council finds that the museum no longer meets the conditions for recognition.

Accredited museums must operate in accordance with the provisions of the Museums Act and the conditions of the Regulation on Accreditation of Museums. The Museums Council is responsible for supervising museum activities in the country, in accordance with the law.
