The role and purpose of the Museum Fund is to strengthen the activities of museums through grants. Recognized museums other than state-owned museums may apply for operating grants to strengthen their activities, and all recognized museums may apply for grants for defined projects. Other museums, museum guides, centers and exhibitions may benefit from grants from the Museum Fund for defined projects in collaboration with recognized museums. The Minister of Education, Science and Culture allocates grants from the Museum Fund upon receipt of proposals from the Museum Council.

The museum fund is discussed in Museums Act No. 141/2011 but it states the role and purpose of the fund:

Chapter VI. Museum Fund.

Article 21. Role and organization. The role of the Museum Fund is to strengthen the activities of museums that fall under this Act. For this purpose, the Fund may support the operations and defined projects of recognized museums, collaborative projects between such museums and other projects. The Fund may support other activities to strengthen professional museum work, including research in the Fund's field of work and the dissemination of information about them. The Museum Fund may spend up to 40% of its available funds on grants to strengthen the operations of recognized museums. The Museum Fund's income is: a. a contribution from the Treasury as determined in the budget, b. other contributions.

Article 22. Grants.
Grants from the Museum Fund are determined in accordance with the Fund's allocation rules, cf. point i of the 2nd paragraph of Article 7. Recognized museums other than state-owned museums may apply for operating grants from the Fund to strengthen their activities. All recognized museums may apply for grants for defined projects. Other museums, museum guides, centers and exhibitions may benefit from grants from the Museum Fund for defined projects in collaboration with recognized museums. The recognized museum shall be the main applicant and responsible party for the project. Central museums and other museums run by the state may participate in such projects. The Museum Fund may provide grants for international projects in which recognized museums participate. Repayment may be requested if a project that has received a grant has not been carried out in accordance with the application and the documents on which the grant was based, if the project has not been carried out in accordance with the terms of the Fund or if the final report has not been submitted within one year of the expected end of the project.

The Minister allocates grants from the Museum Fund upon receipt of proposals from the Museum Council.
