
A new museum definition was approved at the World Congress. ICOM which was held in Prague, Czech Republic, August 20 – 28, 2022.
The Icelandic translation of the definition is as follows:
"A museum is a permanent, not-for-profit institution that serves society through the research, collection, preservation, interpretation and communication of tangible and intangible heritage. Museums are open to the public, accessible and inclusive, and contribute to diversity and sustainability. In their work and active engagement with different community groups, they are guided by professionalism and ethical values, and offer a variety of experiences for the sake of education, enjoyment, reflection and knowledge enhancement."
