For the annual International Museum Day, ICOM selects a theme that is relevant to current issues and concerns of the public. The theme for International Museum Day 2021 is; The Future of Museums: Structure and New Emphasis and will be celebrated on 18 May. Museums, professionals, museum staff and the public are invited to use the theme or guiding principle chosen by ICOM this year to shape new policies and develop ideas that can help cultural institutions address the various challenges facing them in terms of equality, economy and the environment. The aim is that society as a whole will benefit.
2020 was an unusual and difficult year for many. The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted most aspects of our lives. Some unresolved issues have been exacerbated by the pandemic, leading to widespread skepticism about the way our societies are structured and demands for equality for all people have become louder than ever.
Museums were not spared from the situation created by the pandemic, as many of them had to close temporarily. The situation had a negative financial, social and psychological impact on the entire cultural sector, and the end of it is not yet in sight. But there have also been positive signs, as this difficult situation has led to the introduction of various innovations that are probably here to stay. Suffice it to mention the increased emphasis on digital media and innovative ideas about cultural experiences and their communication.
We as a society are at a critical juncture. This year has presented an opportunity for museums to examine their methods of engaging with the communities they serve. Museums are therefore encouraged to explore the diverse digital opportunities available to communicate, educate and entertain. In this way, museums can contribute to a just and sustainable future. We need to seize the opportunity and
to be at the forefront of innovation in cultural work that makes the world a better place, now and after the pandemic is over.
