The Museum Council reminds you that applications for grants from the Museum Fund's main allocation for 2019 are open.

The main allocation of the Museum Fund includes both project grants and operating grants from the Museum Fund. The amount and number of grants awarded are determined by the Fund's available funds as well as the number and quality of applications.

Accredited museums can apply for grants from the museum fund, the fund is also authorized to support other activities to promote professional museum work, including research in the fund's field of work and the dissemination of information about it.

All recognized museums can apply for grants for defined projects. The fund is also authorized to support other activities to promote professional museum work. Other museums, museum guides, centers and exhibitions can benefit from funding from the museum fund for defined projects in collaboration with recognized museums.

The focus topics* of project grants for the next main allocation of the Museums Council 2019 will be the following:

  • Children and young people
  • Collaborative projects, domestically and internationally
  • Digital media

The Museum Council would like to point out, however, that all applications that meet the criteria for the allocation rules will be considered by the Museum Council. Applications with these focus areas must meet the same quality requirements as other applications.

Operating grants:  (Direct link to the application form for an operating grant)

Only recognized museums can apply for operating grants from the fund to strengthen their activities. Recognized state-owned museums and recognized museums that receive operating grants from the budget will not receive operating grants from the museum fund in the same year, but can apply for project grants.

Please note that according to the Museum Fund's allocation rules, a recognized museum can apply for an operating grant to:

  1. Strengthen the museum's professional activities and strengthen its operations
  2. Strengthen innovation in the museum's operations and activities
  3. Strengthen the operation of a museum that has merged with other cultural institutions
  4. Trust the museum's collaboration with non-profit organizations, institutions and other parties through agreements on the preservation and dissemination of cultural heritage.

The application deadline is 4:00 PM on Friday, November 16, 2018..
Applications must be submitted by completing an electronic application form on the Museums Council's application website. https://safnarad.is/umsoknavefur/

The Museum Council's proposal is expected to be submitted to the Minister around January 10, 2019.

The role of the Museum Fund is to support the work of museums that fall under the Museums Act No. 141/2011. To that end, the Fund may support the operations and define projects of recognized museums and collaborative projects between such museums, see https://safnarad.is/ The Museum Council provides comments on grant applications from the Museum Fund. The Minister of Education, Culture and Sports allocates grants from the Museum Fund upon receipt of proposals from the Museum Council in accordance with the Museums Act and the Council's allocation rules from 29 September 2015.


At the 174th meeting of the Museum Council on June 26, 2018, it was agreed, in accordance with Article 2 of the Museum Fund's allocation rules no. 551/2016, to include these three project grant focus areas for the Museum Council's next main allocation in 2019.
