The Minister of Education, Science and Culture, after receiving the opinion of the Museum Council, has allocated continuing education grants from the additional allocation of the Museum Fund to recognized museums in 2017. In the last quarter's additional allocation of the Museum Fund, recognized museums can apply for project grants for lifelong learning, so-called lifelong learning grants. The purpose of these grants is to strengthen the professional work of the museums and enhance the aspect of lifelong learning.
Two types of grants were awarded, Lifelong learning for museum employees on the one hand and Courses/speakers on the other hand. Continuing education for museum employees can be used to pursue formal education (for example, through organized courses) or for more informal study trips, such as visits to museums in Iceland and abroad, or as a travel and subsistence grant for museum staff exchanges. The grant type Courses/speakers is intended as a grant for courses or lectures within Iceland that could benefit a larger group of collectors.
This time, 27 recognized museums received a total of 35 continuing education grants, ranging from 28,700 ISK to 300,000 ISK each. 19 grants of this type Continuing education for museum employees were awarded, total 4,911,700 kr. and 16 grants were awarded by the type Courses/speakers, total 4,302,000 ISK and the total allocation was 9,213,700 ISK.
