International Museum Day is on May 18th, this year's theme is: Museums as a unifying force in a fragmented world.
As a platform for education and knowledge, museums play an important role in fostering peaceful relations and mutual respect. In celebration of International Museum Day in May 2026, you are invited to help shine a light on the year's theme: Museums as Unifying Forces in a Fragmented World. The theme will also feature prominently in the celebrations for ICOM's 80th anniversary this year.
Museums are open spaces that enjoy public trust, where visitors have the opportunity to learn about stories, artifacts, and each other. In an age of division, polarization, and unequal access to knowledge and culture, museums play a key role in rebuilding connections across generations, communities, and borders. Thus, they contribute to dialogue, understanding, participation, and peace within communities and on a global scale.
The title, "Museums as a Force for Unity in a Fragmented World," highlights the potential of museums to bridge the gap between different cultures, communities, and regions.
The purpose of collections is not to put everyone in the same hat, but to create a space where understanding and respect are highly valued. By preserving cultural heritage and memory, fostering education and reflection, and providing an open and accessible space where diverse voices can be heard, museums contribute to diversity and sustainability.

We encourage everyone in the international museum community to participate in Museum Day 2026 and to work with the theme in a way that resonates with their local community. For example, through projects based on participation, collaboration, and increased accessibility, with the aim of fostering empathy and trust within the community.
We look forward to celebrating International Museum Day with you and your collections.
