According to Museums Act No. 141/2011 The Museum Council is tasked with supervising accredited museums that operate in accordance with the Museum Council's terms and conditions for the operations of accredited museums.
This February, twenty accredited museums across the country will receive a notification of the Museum Council's inspection of accredited museums, which is the 2nd part of the Museum Council's inspection, Supervision of museum facilities, museum facilities, preservation of artifacts, and security issues
This part of the monitoring is being developed in collaboration with the National Museum of Iceland, the leading museum in the field of cultural heritage, and this part of the monitoring began in 2016. That year, 13 museums received a notification of monitoring, in 2017, 8 museums received a notification, and in 2018, 20 museums will receive a notification of monitoring, as previously stated. It is expected that the remaining museums will receive a notification of monitoring in early 2019.
The Museum Council's supervision of recognized museums is as follows:
- Supervision of museum operations
This is an annual monitoring that is enforced by accredited collections submitting Annual report of recognized museums to the museum board. - Supervision of museum facilities, museum facilities, preservation of artifacts, and security issues
This monitoring takes place every few years and is carried out by the Museums Council's Monitoring Committee. It is carried out by accredited museums submitting monitoring forms, receiving an assessment report from the Monitoring Committee, and finally by a site visit by the Monitoring Committee. - Supervision of the registration of artifacts and access to museum collections and exhibitions.
Followed by on-site expert review and data review as needed. - Monitoring prevention and response planningThe Museum Council guides and assists accredited museums in developing contingency plans, while accredited museums in Iceland are required to work on contingency plans that must be updated annually.
