International Museum Day is celebrated on May 18th each year, and ICOM, the International Council of Museums, has been organizing the day since 1977.
In honor of the day, the Council of Museums, the Icelandic Chapter of ICOM, and F\u00cdSOS are holding an annual symposium related to the day's theme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Icelandic National Committee of ICOM, F\u00cdSOS, and the National Board of Museums and Monuments hosted a symposium on May 21st at the National Museum, where topics included museums in the context of social disconnection, their future prospects, and their potential for impact. What meaning do museums hold when society is divided and polarization is increasing? What responsibility do cultural institutions bear towards the public as relationship-building centers of knowledge and community hubs? How are museums shaped by their environment, as well as by external pressure and demands for neutrality?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
